PostSubject: Hair Drawing! How so far?   Sun Jun 26, 2011 5:38 pm

Why is it that I can draw hair better in real life, then in GIMP? It is annoying lol, here is the proof.

I drew that!

How can I improve the GIMP hair drawing?

The best thing I would say is the shape. Once you have a good shape everything is up will from there.Think about the shape as the base. If you're base isn't up to par, the whole hair will look off. I suggest to just start practicing on getting the shape first.

For the heck of it, google a hair design ( try something simple at first, like a simple straight hair) and open the picture in Gimp. Make a new layer on top, and trace the hair shape. Make sure to use a smaller size brush when you get to the ends. Using that, draw your strands.

Thanks! I will try that. so what about the strands? At this point should I merge and blend? Or merge and dodge/burn??? :D

Do you draw strands individually, or do you have a scattered brush? If you're doing individually I would suggest grabbing a scattered. It will cut your time by half, and will also blend a lot better!

When it comes to getting a natural looking hair, you need to know how hair falls. Hair doesn't just go in a straight line. I'll talk more about that once you get your shape done. I can like talk you through the steps if that helps? Like you can just draw the hair shape, post and I'll tell you the next step.

Is this good body? Or should I redo it?

It's a good start, but you have to make sure that with hair, it has to look like it actually fits the head. If you look at the top it's a little close to her head. The only way I think that would work is if you were pinning the hair close to the head. But if you were to do that, the bottom part flow out a bit more. The other thing is the hair line is a little too far back on the one side. You would either have the second half of the fringe there, or the actual hair (roots) would start more forward.

I hope you don't mind but I took your picture just to show you what I mean, since I'm terrible at explaining things.

edit: You might also want to start off with a darker colour. I normally even if I'm drawing blond, I start of with a rather dark brown. It will help give you that depth.

Is this better? I didn't want to copy what you did (like save image and all) because then I wouldn't learn anything... so is this better?

It's getting better. I think the top part is a little too high. It gives her almost a cone head, and the leftside (our right) would probably curve more into her neck. Like see how on mine both sides curve in, and then flip out?

This is the brush I'm using now..

Yupp much! The top is still a little high, but you could start drawing the strands now. Now what you wanna do is make sure each layer of colours you follow the hair path, that's extremely important to make sure your hair isn't messy looking.

Like soo..

Is this good? Or is there something to definitely change?

I would definitely try the brush I linked above. Make sure you do more than one layer of strands. I normally have about 4 different colours.

Like so..

Uhh it's a little worse >_<. The brush size could be smaller, and you're going to want to use a different colour.

How do you normally pick your hair colour?

I'm offended since I just started. I can do whatever I want. I'm just going to have to work for it.

I usually just go lighter and lighter and lighter. That's what I learned in Harry's Hair tutorial... at least I think that's what it's called. I use GIMP

Yes you want to go lighter, it just seems you might want to stay more to the saturated side, or you're jumping the the lighter stuff too quickly.

How many colours do you use? I normally use about 4-5, like in the gif I posted.

Hmm.. The next time you try the strands make a swatch of the colours you used. The top colour you used just seems too white, and doesn't blend in well with the base colour.

ok I'll try that, but Jillie, you don't have to do this. I am pretty sure that I'll learn. However, I have earned and learned a bunch from this thread.

Okay. But if you need any more help, I am here for you. Just keep at it. You'll learn. I use to have really ugly hair, and I'm still learning new techniques.
