Tell me what you think :)
Sat May 26, 2012 3:30 am
This is my first time editing a sim, and the first time in a very LOONG time editing at all. I found this off the net and desided I would practice with it. I've got a before and after picture, so tell me what you think. If you could, please be specific. LIke, what did I do wrong? How could I make it look more realistic? Things like this. I really do wanna learn how to do it really good so I'll have atleast a fighting chance at some contests :P And I don't think anyone here would (everyone seems so nice), but incase there is one asshole in the crowd, please don't be harsh. I know it's not magnificent or anything, but I did try my hardest.

Hey !
So. I'll tell you what went wrong, okay ?
The make up doesn't look natural at all. I think the main problem is that you don't smudge. You should really smudge your pale pink lines on the lips until they look like it's shining.
The eyebrows look... well... a bit bushy and very black. I would suggest a lighter color, and that you give them some texture.
The shape of the eyeshadow isn't well defined and it overlaped below the eye and in the eye. And again, don't be afraid to smudge !
The eyeliner and mascara... I'm afraid I'll sound harsh, but... they look... horrible... The eyeliner is too thick (and not smuuudged) and if you want to draw the lashes yourself, do it with a 1 px round brush, and don't draw them in straight lines, but curved. But it's much easier and yay-looking if you just donwload a pack of eyelashes brushes (I use these).
I don' know what you wanted to do with her hair, it's not my style, but that's just my tastes.
I can also see a little pink line in the background and some pixelated areas. It may not sound like much but little details like that make the difference between an excellent photo and a gorgeous, perfect one.
There are loads of great tutorials, especially here, take a look at them if you have some time ! :D
And remember... SMUDGE !!
And I'm sorry if I sounded harsh...

Thanks, and do worry, you didn't sound harsh, I'm not sure how to smudge (I use Photoshop CS5), but I'm sure I can figure it out. And I'll take a look at the tutorials, maybe they can explain something that I don't know yet. But thanks for your feedback. I'll see if I can't get better ::

Sorry about double posting; but I wanna know what ya'll think of this. I think I've gotten kind of better (with the make-up for sure). I know her hair is horrible. This is my first time trying Vanadis' tut on hair and I think I didn't do a step or missed a step or something. It's pretty bad. But I've done the make up a couple times, so let me know what ya'll think about it. And as before, don't be harsh. Critizing what I did wrong and telling me what to do to make it better is always welcomed though

Yay! Thanks I'm glad I'm getting better at the make-up. I may just leave it at that and just use the hair from the game. Instead of trying to do it myself lol. Would you happen to have any pointers that I could use to get the hair any better? I use Photoshop by the way.

The makeup looks better !
For the hair, I use Bliss's tuto and I have Photoshop CS5 too. The paths is the feather (sorry if you don't understand, I'm french and my English is bad in French, the tool names "Plume" )

The makeup is really better ! The lips look great ! For the hair, I would suggest that you use a 1 px round brush and make alot of little lines (that you can smudge after, if you think it looks better) (always in the direction the hair falls) or use special hair brushes, you can find plenty on the internet and very good ones on Deviantart. ;)

Again, sorry about the double posting. I just wanted to know what ya'll thought of this. I didn't even try the make-up this time. I just wanted to work on the hair, so let me know what you think.
For some reason the image isn't looking right. It's alot brighter than I made it. So here's the link to it. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The best option to use in photoshop cs5 which I use, is the gaussian blur filter. Smudging can sometimes start to look funky, so blurring the makeup and playing with the opacity does help.

But won't using the gaussian blur cause it to look, blurred? The one thing that I don't like about doing the hair myself is that it looks too blur for the rest of the body. Will the gaussian blur help fix this, or is there another thing I need to do to fix it? Because I've noticed with both pictures and all my attempts is that it starts to look blurred from the rest of the body.

Thanks Bliss, but I didn't apply any make-up because I pretty well got the gest of it. I just need more practice on it (plus, I don't use gimp). I was talking about the hair [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

For makeup gaussian blur will make it look like makeup normally looks, but you do have to do it on a separate layer or your whole picture will blur. You also need to make sure that you're not blurring it at a huge rate, when I do makeup I usually to a 2-3 pixel blur and keep doing it slowly until it looks smoothed on the skin. For hair, I don't gaussian blur at all unless my strips are a bit too defined and even then I do it at a 1or 2 pixel blur. I don't use the method that Bliss has because she uses GIMP for editing, so that could be where you're not getting the same result.

Ahh! Ok. Well, I looked up a tut for applying make-up, but I think I was missing a few steps, which is why it look like that. But that would explain not getting the same results as Bliss for the hair. I honestly just figured scence Photoshop brushes will work for Gimp, it was basically the same. Only finding the tools, but I'm guessing it's not :P Thanks anyways though. I think I'm just gonna use the hairs from the game right now until I can try different techniques and learn the way that suits me best.
Thanks for everyone's input in trying to help me figure this out though ^.^

Some things will translate from GIMP to Photoshop, but not everything :: I do have a hair tutorial also on the forum somewhere that is for Photoshop if you wanted to take a look.

Soo, I found out why it wasn't looking right and was looking blurred. It was because I was using the blurring tool instead of the smudging tool. So now I've come back with my first attempt at creating hair using the right tool. Let me know if you think it looks any better.

Also, ignore the background and the fact she's not wearing make-up please. I didn't bother with those, but not getting the hair right had been bugging me, so I just had to see if ya'll think I'm getting any better ;)

Not a problem. I am no expert at this so I will leave it to them. I just use premade hair that I know will look good in game and just edit the screenshot. Like in my signature. XD I know not exactly challenging. I've been paying attention to another tutorial of Bliss since I don't have PS, myself. I have GIMP like her so that works for me.
I would say it looks great but like I said I am no expert at it. You can also go to deviantart and see if you can find some premade hairs? And just mess around with what you get from there. Maybe you'll come up with better progress by going that route.

Much, much better ! Now the main thing you have to figure out is how the hair flows and falls, cause it seems a bit stiff. Check out photos on the net or in magazines for that.
Also, the hair you drew looks a bit "chunky" so try adding strands and some "loose" hair to make it look more natural.

Yay! I'm so happy that I'm on the right track. I will work more to get it looking more natural, as Sahara suggested. But yay! I'm so glad that I got the bases for it right XD
@Girlfactor :: I've downloaded premade hairs, but it just didn't look right. I was using cc hairs so I didn't have to try to destroy the picture with making the hair lol. But it was bugging me that I couldn't do it. But thanks

Oh you're welcome. :3 And I know! O: Trust me on that when I say there are some hairs out there (like a huge percent) that aren't great. Some are even glitchy. I've had some that were glitchy to the point they would disappear at a certain angle and my Sim would be bald. o,o I would always ask myself, "What?!" But I got some good hairstyles that don't look too bad if you want those as a second option if you don't care much of editing it that much. XD But naw. I think you want to know that you've made it yourself at least right? XD Sorry. Like I said I suck at giving advice at times.
