Hair drawing - SECOND ATTEMPT UP :D
Thu Jan 05, 2012 12:34 pm
Hey guys, I'm in a bit of a dilemma, I really wanted to draw hair for one of my competition assignments. I tried it but I'm not happy with it :(. I have two versions of it, one not cropped and one cropped. The only reason I cropped the original was because I didn't like how the ends looked (you can see the round circles from my base colour) but I'm still not happy about it. So could you guys give me your opinions? Any advice from anyone is greatly appreciated.
Her hair is supposed to be sort of blown to the side (that's why it's not flat. This was my inspiration:

Hmm I think that's a good start,Nutty but the strands are too big, try making them smaller. As well they don't look free enough if you get what I mean, it looks like they're going in straight lines where in the example pic they look like they're flowing more. Start with that! =)
Oh and for a more smoother look you can change your brush for the actual strands to this one

the 200 px one in this set
This is just a suggestion though you don't have to :seen:

Thank you Bina !
I downloaded the brush but when I use it with the paintbrush tool it just gives me all the little dots and not the smooth sort of texture shown in the picture.. Do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong :$? Sorry xxx

I'm no good at hair drawing but the strands are too big (like what Bina said) plus the strands near the ear looks a bit un-realistic to me.
I noticed in Harrys Tutorial he provided a link to download the brush he normally uses for his hair drawings. ^__^

NP Nutty! Oh and strange, those brushes are able to be used in GIMP too.. but hope you found another way that works!

To fix the odd dots that your getting when you use the hair brush in gimp you need to select the brush that you downloaded ( I circled the correct one in blue) and then drag the spacing option at the bottom of your layer box (circled in red) as far down as it will let you. Now when you use the brush it should turn out smooth, but you have to do that every time you start up gimp.

Here's my second attempt (my final edit too):

I know it's still not perfect but I like it much more than the first try xD.
It's grown on me :3
What do you think?

That is so much better! Still needs work, but really good! SOme parts are a bit blocky and the bottom looks a little unnatural, but for an early hair drawing I'm impressed.
