jpg or png?

Iam not quite sure where this question should be posted, but Iam curious which everyone thinks gives a better picture jpg. or png?

png, definitely.

That's what I've heard, but I cant tell a difference.

PNG helps to keep all your layers in tact by merging visible layers rather than just flattening the image. Also, you do lose SOME quality with jpg. Usually it's not enough to tell a difference. png will be a larger file, while jpg will be smaller. The main difference between the two is that png preserves transparency and jpg does not, at least that's from what I've gathered from working with both.

Vana's 100% right about the transparency. However, JPG does have some plusses. If you have a tendency to make huge pictures (300 px resolution, lots of colors and details, etc) then making the picture a PNG will close to double the file size of what it would be as a JPG. Additionally, most saving methods give you the option of how "Good" you want your JPG to be (1-12). Personally, I use JPG a lot since it takes up much less room even if I want the quality at 12. However, if you have a pixely/grainy picture I would definitely recommend PNG as it can take some of that graininess away
